Asheville is a city where children can have fun with their adults!
There is nothing like fresh mountain air to happify (and tire out) your small people. Having lived here with my children for 13 years, I’m an expert on kid-friendly activities. Here are some of the best:
Hiking –
It’s free and good for children and adults of all ages. A moderate climb for kids with a big view payoff is the Craggy Gardens Picnic Area to the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center. The out and back is approximately 2 miles with several spots to take a break. Bonus points for the fact that there are bathrooms at the picnic area parking lot.
Play at a Brewery –
New Belgium Brewery – The lawn in front of New Belgium in the river arts district is a great place to relax with a beer and let the kids play. You will often find kids on scooters, skateboards and bikes cruising around the sidewalk loop. Bring a picnic blanket and a ball to toss and everyone will be happy.
Play old school video games –
Do you remember playing Pacman in an arcade? You can show your children how it is done at the Asheville Retrocade. Located at 800 Haywood Rd #100, in West Asheville, this old school arcade has rooms full of pinball, old arcade games and the new stuff like Fortnite! Perfect place for a cold or rainy day.
Zip lines for kids?
Located 5 minutes from downtown Asheville, the Adventure Center has Kid Zip for the young folks ages 4-10 and full zip lining for teens and adults. 85 Expo Drive, Asheville
Catch an afternoon movie and pizza –
Kids movies are played at Asheville Pizza and Brewing in north Asheville in the afternoons around 3:00. Check the website for pricing and show times.
Float the French Broad River –
Tie up to your family and enjoy an afternoon floating down the French Broad River. Zen Tubing does the heavy lifting and will shuttle you to the launch site and you will end by your car. Bring snacks, beverages and your waterproof speaker and catch some rays.
Go hang out with real BEARS –
The WNC Nature Center, located in East Asheville, has indigenous animals to our area such as black bears, wolves and birds of prey. There zoo is shaded and there are play structures for your children to explore throughout the center.
Cool off by Creek Stomping –
There are lots of swimming holes and creaks to play in around Asheville when the weather is nice. If you want to stay close to downtown, head to the Asheville Botanical Garden in North Asheville. You can do a mini hike around the grounds and then look for tadpoles in the creek. Don’t forget to wear your water shoes.
